What to Wear for a Photo Session (So You Feel Confident & Look Your Best)

One of the first questions I get from clients is:

“What should we wear?”

And honestly? It’s a great question. What you wear plays a huge role in how your photos feel—timeless, connected, relaxed, and you. The good news is that you don’t need to buy an entirely new wardrobe or stress over matching perfectly. With a little guidance, choosing outfits can be simple and even fun.

Here’s everything I recommend to help you feel confident and comfortable during your photo session.

Start With Neutrals & Soft Colors

Neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you, not your clothes.

Some of my favorites:

  • Cream, beige, tan

  • Soft gray

  • Muted blues or greens

  • Warm earth tones

These colors work well in almost any setting and age well over time. When you look back at your photos years from now, they’ll still feel classic.

Avoid Loud Patterns & Logos

Bold patterns, neon colors, and large logos can be distracting and tend to pull attention away from faces and connection.

Instead, aim for:

  • Solid colors

  • Subtle textures (knit sweaters, linen, denim)

  • Simple layers that add depth without distraction

If one person wears a pattern, keep everyone else more neutral to balance things out.

Coordinate—Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same color. Coordinating outfits creates a much more natural and elevated look.

A good rule of thumb:

  • Choose 2–3 complementary colors

  • Mix light and dark tones

  • Vary textures and layers

This creates visual interest while still feeling cohesive.

Dress for Movement & Comfort

You’ll be walking, sitting, standing, and possibly holding hands or cuddling close. If something feels tight, itchy, or awkward, it will show.

Before your session:

  • Sit down in your outfit

  • Walk around

  • Move your arms

If you feel comfortable, you’ll look comfortable—and that’s where the magic happens.

Shoes Matter More Than You Think

Shoes are often visible in photos, even when you don’t expect them to be.

I recommend:

  • Neutral shoes

  • Avoid athletic sneakers unless the session is intentionally casual

  • Boots, flats, loafers, or clean neutral sneakers work well

Barefoot sessions can also be beautiful depending on the vibe. I highly recommend this for in home sessions!
